Summary of Dear John

Summary: Dear John is about a boy, John, that lives in North Carolina. After high school John enlistes in the army. While home on a leave, John meets Savannah who is in North Carolina doing mission work. Their attraction is mutual and they quickly fall in love. John has to leave two weeks after they met to go back to the army. Savannah agreed that she would wait for him to finish his tour of duty. They write letters to eachother and picked up where they left off when he comes back on another leave. However they start to drift apart when 9-11 occurs and John is forced to re-enlist in the army. They begin to grow apart and eventually Savannah sends him a letter that says she is in love with someone else. John was heartbroken and stops communicating with her. A little while later, John's father died and left John all the coins from his coin collection that is worth a lot of money. While John is home for his fathers funeral, he decides to go visit Savannah. It turns out she married her best friend she grew up with,Tim, who John became friends with when he met Savannah. Tim has Melanoma and there is nothing the doctors can do anymore. Savannah wants to send him to a better hospital that can run experiments and tests on him but she can't afford it. Before John leaves to go back to Iraq, he donates all the money his father's coin collection was worth to Tim's fund. He never spoke to Savannah again and goes on living his life in the army.

  1. I really enjoyed the book. It's not exactally what i thought it was gonna be. thought it would have been more about john and savannah's love but it was more about how the army tore them about in my opinion. when i found out that tim was the one that savannah had fallen in love with, i liked the idea better than if it had been some random guy, they had been together for longer than her and john in a since so for them to be together made since. When john gave all that money i thought it proved hwo much he really did care about not only savannah but tim also

  2. I agree. I thought that Savannah being with tim was better then her being with someone random. Also when John donated the money to Tim I was mad at first but then I realized how much John really did care about Savannah and he wanted her to be happy. Over all I thought Dear John was a really good book and enjoyed reading it.

  3. I thought that Dear John was a really good book. From the very beginning it caught my attention and was hard to put down. I thought it was really cute how he jumped off the boardwalk to save her purse. I really thought that they truly loved each other and they were going to make it last when he went to war. I had no idea that she was going to fall in love with Tim since he was her best friend. When the letter came that said she fell in love with another guy my heart sank for John, at that point I was disapointed with the book. Towards the end of the book when John went and visited Savannah I thought that they were going to get back together. It was easy to tell that they still loved each other but it just wasn't enough. When John decided to give the money from his dad's coin collection to Tim i was upset, but I realized that he was only doing that because of his love for Savannah. John only wanted her to be happy so that made sense. I wasn't happy with the ending because I wanted them to get back together but Overall I really really liked this book.

  6. I thought it was a good book with a bad ending.
Tim even told john, Savannah had never loved him as much as John. Even five years later they still were so in love with eachother. I just don't inderstand why Nicholas Sparls creates great love stories but never lets the characters end up together.

  8. If this is a story about True Love then why is John Tyree the only one paying the ultimate price for doing the right thing? Savannah being who she is and despite her feelings for John will never walk away from Tim, in her mind when they got married it was forever; even though you begin understand she wished shied married John instead of Tim.
After reading the book I was left with more questions than answers. After John's selfless act giving Tim the money from his dad’s coin collection, which saves Tim’s life, John had no choice but to walk away and let Savannah and Tim get through Tim's illness, however it worked out. At the end of the book John decides that his love for Savannah somehow felt wrong, it was causing nothing but pain for everyone including himself. At the time he was right there was pain, but not for the reasons he though. The pain both Savannah and John felt was a longing to be together, understanding it was a mistake not to be, but under the circumstances there was nothing anyone could do. Savannah needed to be there for Tim, he was going to die without her help. But a year later when John goes back to see what’s going on you realize that both John and Savannah still love each other more than ever. This is where the questions start. I think Tim is the one that caused and is still causing all the pain. Tim stole John and Savannah’s future; he admitted that he did the horse ranch for Savannah not the other way around like Savannah thinks. Savannah thinks Tim did it as a selfless act for his brother Alan and because it’s what Tim’s parents always wanted him to do. Tim knew this would make him and Savannah closer and it did. His motives were less than honorable. Tim should realize that he is the one standing in the way of true love and give Savannah up. Up till now the only persons who have suffered are John and Savannah. Tim got what he wanted Savannah, he planned the whole. What price did Tim pay, nothing , he got the girl, got a guardian and baby sitter for Alan, got someone who fought tooth and nail to keep him alive which worked and it was John who set the standard for what true love really meant giving Tim the money from the sale of his dads coin collection so Savannah could save his life. Even when Tim asked John to love Savannah if he died, Tim was in part looking for forgiveness understanding his role in all this. John is mistaken thinking somehow Tim’s a better person than he, it’s the other way around. Tim knows Savannah loves John more than she would ever love him, but dose nothing. Tim should be grateful to Savannah for saving his life, acknowledge the manipulation he used to get her to marry him do the right thing and let her go, only then will it show that Tim understands what true love really means. Tim and Savannah’s relationship is based on a lie. Savannah and Tim’s relationship didn’t develop by accident as Savannah thinks Tim planned it, he used his lifetime friendship, Savannah feelings of loss missing John and his feelings of loss when his parents died to find a common thread and when he proposed the opening of the horse ranch for autistic kid Savannah fell into his trap. Savannah had no choice Tim knew exactly how to manipulate her. Tim knows that Savannah loves John more than she will ever love him, not letting her go shows exactly how selfish and manipulative he really is.
That’s what I got out of the book, the characters John Tyree the hero who didn’t get the girl but should, Savannah Lynn Curtis the honest steadfast victim who only want happiness and Tim Wheddon the selfish manipulative villain who wants what he wants and won’t let go of what he has even if it causes others pain. If ever there was a need for another book to finish what Dear John started this is it?

  13. In my opinion, the only point made me care is the short conversation between John and Savannah at her home when he came back for his dad's funeral. It explained exactly why this was happening, adding some more their action, the way they looked back their past through letters sent by John that Savannah was still keeping, the way they looked each other showed how much they wanted each other but stoping themself by their respect and love. When John left just saying Good bye Savannah, I can understand deeply his feeling that time...I did it as a little blame Savannah while she wished his reply as usual but no...he left there with good bye...He could not do anything than...because he knew everything was not same previously
